We received this letter from an Express reader about a recent story about a transgender women to man who gave birth to a baby.

Do you agree? Discuss.

I’m a post op MTF and this sensationalism disgusts me .
It makes post op out to be some sort of a freak and shows the total lack of understanding of true Trans. Transgender or transsexuals or whatever you may wish to call us. I’m a female TG.

Over the last couple of years, Oprah has done a great deal to highlight Tran’s issues and help understanding but this has undone a great deal. This person was still a female, even if she was allowed to legally change her gender. I’m not exactly sure what GRS she has actually undergone but clearly she still had ovaries and a womb at the minimum.

On top of that I would suggest it highly unlikely she was on any female hormone blockers or taking testosterone during the pregnancy. She still had a motherly instinct to foster a child. She is a female masquerading as a man. At best a cross dresser/transvestite but not a true Transgender FTM.

For sure I can’t talk as an FTM but I can talk from experience as a postop MTF. That’s more understanding or experience than any straight genetic person has and therefore gives me more right to comment on and judge. Having talked and discussed with many MTF, true Trans reach a point where we hate our genitals being recognised, they don’t function due to the levels of hormones we take, we don’t want them touched, are embarrassed if they function uncontrollably. We don’t enjoy having sexual intercourse as a male. We hate our male genitals and don’t want them. We want to be the females we are and not hold on to certain parts but enjoy the other parts.Having two bites of the cake.

Alas, in NZ, no one really knows how many true FTM or MTF transgender there actually are and the same would be in most countries. Here in NZ, several of us have taken a stab at it and recon its likely there are no more than about 200. We are the minority within the minority. But we have gone further, experienced more and alas in many ways need more. I believe we understand ourselves better than most. However we are in danger of being overrun by numbers. Where FTM and MTF were once regarded solely as ‘transgender’ we have now CD, drag queens, intersex and more covered by this term. Endorsed by common usage, a lack of knowledge and the Human Rights Commission promoting it in its report into discrimination in the transgender community.

It’s a long standing argument and one I’m not about to change I know and so I largely accept it. However it does mean I will not be referred to as a ‘transgender’. I’m a female or female TG. A member of the transgender community - yes. We are not elitists or any more special than anyone else but we do have a right to be treated as who we are and not just dumped in a barrel with everyone else because we are a minority.

What understanding do they {the media} really have? The same with the makers of the Oprah programme. To me this ‘man having a baby’ was no more than a money making scam by a genetic female and has been totally denigrating to true FTM and MTF.

Had this person been a true FTM and fathered the child or a true MTF and given birth naturally, then this story would have been fantastic but alas it is a farce. I will expect a lot to disagree with me but I ask all to consider, if you are not true FTM or MTF then you have no real actual understanding and can’t comment. I’m full on open and honest about who and what I am and hide from no one so hence my name is at the bottom. I will always be a genetic male alas but I am legally and fully a female. I am who I am.
I was just thinking, we've had Labour for a while now, and they have been very good to the gay community, especially when you compaire us to other countries like Oz or the States.

Where they both have right-wing governments.

Whats going to happen to us if John finally manages to lead National to victory?
will our community go to hell in a handbasket? or is NZ so far along that we dont need to worry, and all we need to think about is the possibility of tax cuts?
so, any thoughts?

So today... for $1.60 i'm taking the Link to work, and walking to the bus stop with my boyfriend.
instead of paying $7.50 for the early bird special, and then filling up with $20 gas (which doesn't even give me 10 litres of petrol anymore!!)
I think, what took me so long to stop using the car to work, was that it was cold!!! and i'm a wuss! haha!!
Is it part of the Gay way of life to try looking young forever? Are we obliged by some moral code to keep on going to the gym and look perfect at all costs? Do we really have to keep up with the fashion?

Hey there,

I've just moved places and thought it would go all smoothly. The reality was completely chaotic!
My broadband connection was down for 4 whole days!!! How can you live without checking your emails / your bank accounts... It made me realize how dependent I am from all those technological traps that surround me. Brought me back to the feeling of when my IPhone didn't synchronize properly with my computer: the end of the world of course!

So here I am, completely hooked to the Internet... Who would have thought this, 20 years ago, as I was growing up in the countryside of Normandy, France? I have to say, it was a real awakening to me that times have definitely changed!

Let me know what you think of that, Pierre.
